Why Magnesium Matters More Than You Think
February 20, 2026 . Elizabeth Heitzmann
Magnesium is one of the most common nutrient deficiencies I see. As a Board Certified Psychotherapist and integrative health practitioner.
And yet, it is involved in over 300 processes in the body.
When someone comes to me feeling tense, exhausted, not sleeping well, or constantly “on edge,” magnesium is often part of the conversation. Not because it is a magic solution, but because it is foundational.
Magnesium supports muscle relaxation, nervous system balance, healthy sleep cycles, blood sugar regulation, and stress response. It plays a role in how your body produces energy and how effectively it calms itself.
That balance matters.
Stress depletes magnesium.
When your body is in a constant fight-or-flight state, magnesium is used at a higher rate. Over time, that depletion can contribute to muscle tightness, headaches, poor sleep, irritability, and increased nervous system sensitivity.
This becomes a cycle. Stress lowers magnesium. Low magnesium makes the nervous system more reactive. And the body struggles to settle.
Supporting magnesium levels can help interrupt that pattern.
One of the biggest misconceptions is that all magnesium supplements are interchangeable.
Different forms of magnesium serve different purposes. Some are more supportive for digestion. Others are better absorbed for nervous system or muscle support. The right form depends on what your body needs.
This is why individualized guidance matters.
More is not better. The form, dosage, and timing should align with your symptoms and overall health picture.
Magnesium plays an important role in helping the body shift into a more relaxed state. It supports the nervous system’s ability to move out of fight-or-flight and into rest and recovery.
When magnesium levels are adequate, many people notice:
● Improved sleep quality
● Reduced muscle tension
● Fewer stress-related headaches
● A greater sense of calm
Magnesium does not force the body to relax. It supports the body’s natural ability to regulate itself.
And like all supplements, it works best when paired with healthy sleep habits, proper hydration, balanced nutrition, and stress-reducing practices such as floating, breathwork, or gentle movement.
Magnesium is not trendy. It is not flashy. It is foundational.
Sometimes healing does not begin with something complicated. It begins with restoring what the body has been quietly missing.
If you are experiencing chronic stress, tension, sleep disruption, or persistent fatigue, it may be worth exploring whether magnesium support could benefit you.
As always, supplementation should be thoughtful and personalized. The goal is not to add more to your routine. The goal is to support your body in a way that feels sustainable and aligned.
Healing starts with understanding what your body needs and honoring its design. Learn more on my YouTube channel.
